It's That Time of Year Again

Hello Everyone!

It's that time of year again, when the days get shorter and the nights get colder. December crept up quite quickly and now we're only two and a half weeks from OEK's winter vacation. On Monday Brian and I put up the Christmas tree at Umegaoka, and on Wednesday, with a little help from Lina, we put up the Christmas tree at Tsukimi as well. Lina was a good little helper, decorating the bottom half of the tree with lots of tinsel.


With Christmas vacation fast approaching, the teachers and staff are all busy making plans. Martin is headed to Europe for Christmas, spending some time in Italy and Bulgaria. Cynthia will be heading to Shikoku with her friends, and her vacation traveling Japan. Brian and his wife, Akane, will be busy settling in their new house! They recently moved close to the Fox Shrine, to a beautiful house with lots of sun. As for me, I'll be heading down under to Australia to visit some friends, including former OEK teachers, Jo and Rebecca! It will be my first visit to Australia and I'm really looking forward to visiting cities such as Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney!

Jayne is also getting ready to travel, as she will be returning to Australia next week. But don't worry, she'll be back in the spring! When you see her, make sure to wish her "Happy Birthday" ... Jayne turns 53 years young on December 5th.

Just a reminder that OEK will be closed from December 20th, 2009 until January 3rd, 2009. We will reopen on January 4th and we're looking forward to hearing all about your wonderful winter adventures.

Gardening at OEK

Planting trees near your home that produce edible fruits and vegetables is an example of the permaculture approach to gardening. Not only will you have fresh foods within reach, but the trees will help your house to retain heat in the winter and stay cool in the summer.


Recently we planted this avocado tree in the garden at Umegaoka.

Here are some of my favorite recipes that use avocados:

Avocado Toast

Ingredients: lemon/lime juice, a pinch of salt, ground black pepper, an avocado
Directions: Mash a small piece of ripe avocado with lemon juice and a pinch of salt and black pepper. Spread on freshly-toasted bread.

Easy Spicy Guacamole

Ingredients: half of a lime, 2 ripe avocados, half of a teaspoon of black pepper, half of a teaspoon of Tabasco sauce
Directions: Scoop out the avocado with a spoon and put the avocado and other ingredients into a mixing bowl. Mash the avocado until it is thoroughly mixed. Serve with tortilla chips or pita bread.

食用のフルーツや野菜を育てるために家のそばに木を植えることはガーデニングで生態系農業に取り組む一例です。手の届く所にある新鮮な野菜を食べられるだけではなく、冬には家を暖かく保ち、夏には涼しくするのに役立ちます。




最近私たちは梅ヶ岡の庭にこのアボカドの木を植えました。

アボカドを使った僕のお気に入りレシピです；

アボカドトースト

材料：レモン（もしくはライムジュース）、塩ひとつまみ、黒コショウ、アボカド
作り方：小さい熟したアボカドをレモン汁と塩コショウ一つまみを入れてつぶす。
トーストに広げる。

簡単スパイシーガカモーレ

材料：ライム半分、熟したアボカド２個、黒コショウ小さじ半分、タバスコ小さじ半分
作り方：スプーンでアボカドをすくって、他の材料とアボカドをボールに入れる。完全に混ざるまでアボカドをつぶす。トルティーヤチップスやピタブレッドと一緒のどうぞ。

The Monster Bash!!!

Hi Everyone,

The Halloween party was so much fun!! I'm so happy many students were able to attend and we all dressed up in costumes. I was Cutie Honey and Dante, my boyfriend who is visiting from America dressed up as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Carribbean. Halloween Party

Hey Everyone,

The OEK Kids Halloween Party is coming up soon. On Sunday, October 25 we'll be hosting two Halloween Parties at Funakoshi Community Learning Center.

Baby and Kindergarten Party: 13:30 ~ 2:30

Elementary Party: 15:10 ~ 16:30

All the teachers are very busy getting ready for the party. We have over 60 children attending this year, and we're looking forward to seeing everyone in their costumes!! "Dress to impress" as we'll be giving prizes to the best dressed Elementary boy and girl!

ＯＥＫのキッズハロウィーンパーティーがもうすぐやってくるよ。
１０月２５日（日）に船越生涯学習交流館にて２回ハロウィーンパーティーをやります。

ベイビーと幼稚園児のパーティー：13：30～14：30
小学生のパーティー：15：10～16：30

スタッフみんながパーティーの準備で大忙しです。今年は６０人以上の子供達が参加するので、衣装を着たみんなに会えるのを楽しみにしているよ！！　“印象に残ったドレス”としてベストドレッサーの小学生の女の子、男の子に賞をあげるよ！

Love Japan

Hey everyone, it's Martin. I'm really happy to be in Japan. I've been here for more than a month now, a long time!! I'm still settling in because everything is still very new to me. I still take a lot of photos because there are so many interesting things to take pictures of in Japan! I have to say my move to Japan has gone very well, everything has worked out great and so far I have had a great experience. I just spent a weekend in Osaka and I loved it. I hope to see a lot more of Japan in the next few months.

やあ。みんな。マーティンだよ。日本にいて本当にハッピーです。ここに来てから１ヵ月以上経つなんて早いよね！！僕にとって全てがとても新鮮だから今も毎日慣れようとがんばってます！日本には写真を撮りたくなるような興味深いものがたくさんあるから、今も毎日たくさん写真を撮っているよ。引越しも全てうまくいってこの一ヶ月毎日良い経験をすることができました。この前の週末は大阪で過ごしました。大阪も大好き。この先２，３ヶ月でもっと日本を見れたらいいなあ。

Farewell Ken and Cindy!

September has come and gone, and along with the end of the hot and sticky summer months came the end of our time with two wonderful teachers and friends, Ken and Cindy.

Ken, who came to OEK back in February 2008, brought an amazing energy into the school, filling the school with lots of laughter, enthusiasm and techno music. During his time here he was dedicated to his students and the school, and he grew a lot as a teacher and as a person. After a four week stop in Thailand, Ken will head back home to Canada.


Cindy joined OEK back in November, 2008 with a big smile and a big heart. During her time here she really grew into a new style of teaching, becoming a wonderful teacher and an essential part of our team. Cindy will be continuing her journey in Japan, moving to Gunma to work as a kindergarten teacher.

As Ken and Cindy leave Shimizu they will move on to new adventures and take on new challenges. Both teachers have become an invaluable part of our school, and will be sorely missed by all. We wish them health, happiness, and the best of luck as they take the next step, and all the best for them in the future!

Thank you for all the laughs and memories, but most importantly, thank you for your friendship. Lots of love to you both!

9月が来てそして去って、それは蒸し暑い夏の終わりと共にすばらしい講師、友人でもあるKenとCindyとのお別れの時でもありました。
Kenは2008年2月にOEKに仲間入りし、いつも元気いっぱい、皆にパワーをくれました。教室は笑いが絶えず、皆やる気いっぱいで、そしていつもテクノミュージックが流れていたね。OEKで過ごした間、Kenはいつも生徒や教室のことを考え、精一杯取り組んでくれました。そして彼自身も一人の講師として、そして人として成長したね。今はタイで旅をしていて、その後カナダへ帰るとのことです。
Cindyは2008年11月とびっきりの笑顔と熱いハートで教室に仲間入りしました。ここでの時間、シンディーはここで新しいスタイルの教育法を学び、そしてすばらしい講師となり、私達の大切な仲間の一人となりました。彼女もまた新たな旅を日本で送っています。群馬へ引越し、今は幼稚園で英語講師としてがんばっています。

KenとCindyは次のアドベンチャーへチャレンジの旅へ出ました。二人は私達教室の大切なファミリーです。非常に寂しくはありますが、スタッフ一同彼らの健康、幸せ、そして次のステップでの活躍を願っています。

Okaeri!

Hi Everyone!

After a three week holiday, the OEK teachers and staff are very happy to welcome everyone back to school! We're very excited to be back in Shimizu, and are looking forward to seeing you in class.

We'd also like to thank all the students and families who joined us on August 2nd to dance at the Minato Matsuri. We had a great time, and we hope you did too!

3週間の夏休みも終わり、スタッフ全員元気たっぷり、皆さんが教室に来るのを楽しみに待っています。
私たちは清水に戻るのをとってもワクワクしていました。クラスでまた皆に会えるのをとっても楽しみにしていますよ。

そうそう、皆さんにお礼を言いたいです。8月2日のかっぽれ祭りに参加してくださった生徒の皆様、ご家族の皆様、ありがとうございました。私達は本当楽しい時を過ごすことができました。
