One of the great things about being an American living in Japan is being able to experience a different culture than my own. Japan has so many amazing traditions that I have been fortunate to be a part of. Though we all share the same planet, the way that we choose to live and die on this planet can be quite different depending on where you grow up and how you view the world.
Even within countries like America or Japan there is an astounding variety of different ways to live your life. My hometown of New Orleans has a very unique culture, and today I thought I would share with you one of the most interesting New Orleans traditions--the jazz funeral.
Jazz music is a big part of the culture of New Orleans. When my wife and I had our wedding in New Orleans, we both agreed that the most important part of the wedding was having a jazz band play. One of many traditions surrounding jazz music in New Orleans is the jazz funeral, which is usually only given for jazz musicians.
People play music during the entire time of a jazz funeral. In the beginning, the music is solemn, and all of the musician`s friends and family take a chance to say goodbye. Gradually, the music becomes more upbeat and people celebrate the life of the musician by dancing and singing along to the music. People who don`t know the musician are encouraged to join along and celebrate.

I am really happy to be able to learn more about the culture of Japan and share a small part of the life journey of all of my students. Daily living can be quite busy, but it is important to remember that there is a lot to celebrate.

ジャズ葬
僕はアメリカ人ですが、日本に住んでいてよかったなと思うことの一つに、自分の故郷とは違う文化が経験できることがあげられます。日本には、たくさんの素晴らしい伝統があり、それを共に経験できて幸せです。僕たちは皆同じ地球に住んでいるけど、暮らしや死に関しての習慣は育った場所や世界観で全く違うこともあります。アメリカや日本のそれぞれの国内でさえ、驚いてしまう色々な暮らしの習慣があります。
僕の故郷のニューオリンズは、独自の文化があります。今回は、中でも一番興味深い伝統―ジャズ葬―を皆さんにお伝えしたいと思います。
ジャズミュージックはニューオリンズの文化にはかかせないものです。ニューオリンズで行った僕たちの結婚式では、ジャズバンド演奏をしてもらいました。
ニューオリンズのジャズミュージックにまつわる伝統の一つに、ジャズ葬がありますが、だいたい、ジャズミュージシャンのときに執り行われます。葬儀の間はずっと、ジャズが演奏されます。始めに、厳粛な音楽が流れ、ミュージシャンの友人や家族が故人に別れを告げます。そして徐々に音楽はアップビートになり、皆、音楽に合わせて踊ったり歌ったりして、故人の人生をほめたたえるのです。故人と直接知り合いではない人も一緒になって故人を送ります。（ジャズ葬の様子をリンクしたのでご覧いただけます）
日本の文化をたくさん知ることができて、また、生徒の皆さんと人生の旅を少しでも共有できて、僕はとても幸せです。日々忙しいけれど、いろいろなことを祝うのを心に留めるのは大事ですね。
