Like a Rat, I Want to be Beautiful

Man, I love punk rock.

I like music of all genres, but punk rock has touched me deep in my heart. And there is no finer punk rock band in all of the world than The Blue Hearts from Japan.

While there are many great songs by The Blue Hearts, I think that the song "Linda Linda" has some of the deepest lyrics that I have ever come across:

「どぶ　ねずみ　みたい　に
うつくしく　なりたい」

Which, in English, would probably best be translated as "like a rat, I want to be beautiful."

Of course, a rat is not traditionally thought of as being beautiful, but why not?

I think the point that Hiroto is trying to make is that often society and the media dictate to us what we should view as "beautiful." If you turn on a television you are bombarded with images of what is supposed to be beautiful. Usually this consists of young, trendy people. However, the reality is that most people don`t personally know these trendy people, and often these celebrities are quite delusional people.

In the real world, beauty and meaning can be found in the most unexpected places: amidst a difficult problem, with a person who has failed at something, in an everyday routine.
And while the world is filled with suffering and difficult situations, when we open ourselves to the possibility that beauty can be found in strange places I think we are taking one step closer towards happiness.

Who knows, maybe rats are happier than most people.

ドブネズミみたいに、美しくなりたい

パンク・ロック最高

どのジャンルの音楽も好きだけど、特に僕の心の奥に響くのはパンク・ロックです。
そして、世界で一番すごいパンク・ロックバンドは、何と言っても、日本のザ・ブルーハーツ。
ザ・ブルーハーツの歌はもちろんたくさんあるけど、中でも“リンダ　リンダ”の歌詞は意味がとっても深いなと思う。
「どぶねずみみたいに　美しくなりたい」
この歌詞を英語にすると、おそらく、"Like a rat, I want to be beautiful."がうまく訳せてると思う。

でも昔から、ドブネズミは美しい、と考えられていません。
でも、なぜなんだろう？
きっとヒロトは、「社会やメディアが、これが美しいんだ、ということをコントロールしている」と伝えたいんだと思う。テレビをつけると、こういうモノが美しい、と影響を受けます。だいたいそれは若者や流行の人たちだったりするけど、現実的には、僕たちは個人的にその人たちのことを知らないし、そういう有名人は結局、創られた幻想の人たちです。
現実の世界では、美しいものや価値のあるものはまるで予期してない所で見つかります。例えば、日々の中で何かに失敗した人と難しい問題のさなかにいる時。
世の中には苦しい状況や大変な時がたくさんあります。でもそんな時に、思いもしない所で美しい事柄を見つけたいものです。きっと幸せに一歩近づく場所だと思います。

ひょっとするとドブネズミは、ほとんどの人より幸せかもね。

節分

今日は節分です。
皆さんは豆まきしましたか？恵方巻きは食べましたか？
今日は子供たちが鬼のお面をして教室へ来てくれました。
きっと幼稚園や町内で豆まきをしてきたのでしょう、
とってもかわいかったです。
OEKでも豆まきしましたよ。
