To the end of 2009!

NEW YEAR'S MORNING 2009
And already a year has passed by - oh so quickly!

Thank you for sharing 2009 with us at Oshaberi Eikaiwa Kyoshitsu.
It has been another big year. we have said good-bye to teachers we have loved having with us and then to the hellos of our new staff who are enthusiastic and love being at OEK!
In December we also welcome Noriko our new part time manger and we are all looking forward to working together to make a wonderful year for all of us in 2010!

And of course fabulous news with Kotoe our well loved manager now pregnant and looking forward to her having her babe at the end of April ...

I will be back at the beginning of April and have the pleasure of staying until the end of July - the only person who is not impressed is my grandson, Izumo, in Australia - he definitely likes having me close by - so how lucky to be so loved!

And I wish for all a wonderful year - even if it has its challenges may we all have love in our lives and hope in our hearts. And may we all make lots of great English memories together!

It's That Time of Year Again

Hello Everyone!

It's that time of year again, when the days get shorter and the nights get colder. December crept up quite quickly and now we're only two and a half weeks from OEK's winter vacation. On Monday Brian and I put up the Christmas tree at Umegaoka, and on Wednesday, with a little help from Lina, we put up the Christmas tree at Tsukimi as well. Lina was a good little helper, decorating the bottom half of the tree with lots of tinsel.


With Christmas vacation fast approaching, the teachers and staff are all busy making plans. Martin is headed to Europe for Christmas, spending some time in Italy and Bulgaria. Cynthia will be heading to Shikoku with her friends, and her vacation traveling Japan. Brian and his wife, Akane, will be busy settling in their new house! They recently moved close to the Fox Shrine, to a beautiful house with lots of sun. As for me, I'll be heading down under to Australia to visit some friends, including former OEK teachers, Jo and Rebecca! It will be my first visit to Australia and I'm really looking forward to visiting cities such as Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney!

Jayne is also getting ready to travel, as she will be returning to Australia next week. But don't worry, she'll be back in the spring! When you see her, make sure to wish her "Happy Birthday" ... Jayne turns 53 years young on December 5th.

Just a reminder that OEK will be closed from December 20th, 2009 until January 3rd, 2009. We will reopen on January 4th and we're looking forward to hearing all about your wonderful winter adventures.

Gardening at OEK

Planting trees near your home that produce edible fruits and vegetables is an example of the permaculture approach to gardening. Not only will you have fresh foods within reach, but the trees will help your house to retain heat in the winter and stay cool in the summer.


Recently we planted this avocado tree in the garden at Umegaoka.

Here are some of my favorite recipes that use avocados:

Avocado Toast

Ingredients: lemon/lime juice, a pinch of salt, ground black pepper, an avocado
Directions: Mash a small piece of ripe avocado with lemon juice and a pinch of salt and black pepper. Spread on freshly-toasted bread.

Easy Spicy Guacamole

Ingredients: half of a lime, 2 ripe avocados, half of a teaspoon of black pepper, half of a teaspoon of Tabasco sauce
Directions: Scoop out the avocado with a spoon and put the avocado and other ingredients into a mixing bowl. Mash the avocado until it is thoroughly mixed. Serve with tortilla chips or pita bread.

食用のフルーツや野菜を育てるために家のそばに木を植えることはガーデニングで生態系農業に取り組む一例です。手の届く所にある新鮮な野菜を食べられるだけではなく、冬には家を暖かく保ち、夏には涼しくするのに役立ちます。




最近私たちは梅ヶ岡の庭にこのアボカドの木を植えました。

アボカドを使った僕のお気に入りレシピです；

アボカドトースト

材料：レモン（もしくはライムジュース）、塩ひとつまみ、黒コショウ、アボカド
作り方：小さい熟したアボカドをレモン汁と塩コショウ一つまみを入れてつぶす。
トーストに広げる。

簡単スパイシーガカモーレ

材料：ライム半分、熟したアボカド２個、黒コショウ小さじ半分、タバスコ小さじ半分
作り方：スプーンでアボカドをすくって、他の材料とアボカドをボールに入れる。完全に混ざるまでアボカドをつぶす。トルティーヤチップスやピタブレッドと一緒のどうぞ。

The Monster Bash!!!

The Halloween party was so much fun!! I'm so happy many students were able to attend and we all dressed up in costumes. I was Cutie Honey and Dante, my boyfriend who is visiting from America dressed up as Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Carribbean. Halloween Party

Hey Everyone,

The OEK Kids Halloween Party is coming up soon. On Sunday, October 25 we'll be hosting two Halloween Parties at Funakoshi Community Learning Center.

Baby and Kindergarten Party: 13:30 ~ 2:30

Elementary Party: 15:10 ~ 16:30

All the teachers are very busy getting ready for the party. We have over 60 children attending this year, and we're looking forward to seeing everyone in their costumes!! "Dress to impress" as we'll be giving prizes to the best dressed Elementary boy and girl!

ベイビーと幼稚園児のパーティー：13：30～14：30
小学生のパーティー：15：10～16：30

スタッフみんながパーティーの準備で大忙しです。今年は６０人以上の子供達が参加するので、衣装を着たみんなに会えるのを楽しみにしているよ！！　“印象に残ったドレス”としてベストドレッサーの小学生の女の子、男の子に賞をあげるよ！

Love Japan

Hey everyone, it's Martin. I'm really happy to be in Japan. I've been here for more than a month now, a long time!! I'm still settling in because everything is still very new to me. I still take a lot of photos because there are so many interesting things to take pictures of in Japan! I have to say my move to Japan has gone very well, everything has worked out great and so far I have had a great experience. I just spent a weekend in Osaka and I loved it. I hope to see a lot more of Japan in the next few months.

やあ。みんな。マーティンだよ。日本にいて本当にハッピーです。ここに来てから１ヵ月以上経つなんて早いよね！！僕にとって全てがとても新鮮だから今も毎日慣れようとがんばってます！日本には写真を撮りたくなるような興味深いものがたくさんあるから、今も毎日たくさん写真を撮っているよ。引越しも全てうまくいってこの一ヶ月毎日良い経験をすることができました。この前の週末は大阪で過ごしました。大阪も大好き。この先２，３ヶ月でもっと日本を見れたらいいなあ。

Farewell Ken and Cindy!

September has come and gone, and along with the end of the hot and sticky summer months came the end of our time with two wonderful teachers and friends, Ken and Cindy.

Ken, who came to OEK back in February 2008, brought an amazing energy into the school, filling the school with lots of laughter, enthusiasm and techno music. During his time here he was dedicated to his students and the school, and he grew a lot as a teacher and as a person. After a four week stop in Thailand, Ken will head back home to Canada.


Cindy joined OEK back in November, 2008 with a big smile and a big heart. During her time here she really grew into a new style of teaching, becoming a wonderful teacher and an essential part of our team. Cindy will be continuing her journey in Japan, moving to Gunma to work as a kindergarten teacher.

As Ken and Cindy leave Shimizu they will move on to new adventures and take on new challenges. Both teachers have become an invaluable part of our school, and will be sorely missed by all. We wish them health, happiness, and the best of luck as they take the next step, and all the best for them in the future!

Thank you for all the laughs and memories, but most importantly, thank you for your friendship. Lots of love to you both!

9月が来てそして去って、それは蒸し暑い夏の終わりと共にすばらしい講師、友人でもあるKenとCindyとのお別れの時でもありました。
Kenは2008年2月にOEKに仲間入りし、いつも元気いっぱい、皆にパワーをくれました。教室は笑いが絶えず、皆やる気いっぱいで、そしていつもテクノミュージックが流れていたね。OEKで過ごした間、Kenはいつも生徒や教室のことを考え、精一杯取り組んでくれました。そして彼自身も一人の講師として、そして人として成長したね。今はタイで旅をしていて、その後カナダへ帰るとのことです。
Cindyは2008年11月とびっきりの笑顔と熱いハートで教室に仲間入りしました。ここでの時間、シンディーはここで新しいスタイルの教育法を学び、そしてすばらしい講師となり、私達の大切な仲間の一人となりました。彼女もまた新たな旅を日本で送っています。群馬へ引越し、今は幼稚園で英語講師としてがんばっています。

KenとCindyは次のアドベンチャーへチャレンジの旅へ出ました。二人は私達教室の大切なファミリーです。非常に寂しくはありますが、スタッフ一同彼らの健康、幸せ、そして次のステップでの活躍を願っています。

Hi Everyone!

After a three week holiday, the OEK teachers and staff are very happy to welcome everyone back to school! We're very excited to be back in Shimizu, and are looking forward to seeing you in class.

We'd also like to thank all the students and families who joined us on August 2nd to dance at the Minato Matsuri. We had a great time, and we hope you did too!

OEK News

Hi Everyone!

The days are passing quickly and summer vacation is coming soon! But before the break, we have a few announcements:

OEK will be participating in the Minato Matsuri Festival on August 1st This will be the first time Cindy, Brian, Mari and I will dance Kappore in the festival, and we're all looking forward to it!

OEK is also starting a new three-month beginner's course and a Mother's class (where moms can bring their children to the lesson) in September. Please contact the school at 054-352-5190 or info@oshaberi.net for more information.

As some of you may already know, two of our teachers, Ken and Cindy, will be leaving OEK at the end of September. Ken will be returning home to Canada, with plans to travel and become a citizen of the world, while Cindy will be pursuing a career in university teaching. We're really excited for them, and we're wishing them the best of luck!

OEK would like to welcome two new teachers to our school! Cynthia from Houston Texas, and Martin from Auckland New Zealand will be joining the OEK family mid-September!

Finally, the OEK staff is really looking forward to having a few weeks off in August to relax, meet friends, and do some travelling! The teachers are all going on separate adventures:

Ken is going home to his town of Hickson, where he will be visiting his family and touring Ontario with some friends from Mishima.

Cindy is going to America, where she'll travel to Ohio and Arizona!

Brian will be relaxing with his wife, Akane, while making some short trips to visit family and friends in Japan.

As for myself, I'm headed on a multi-city Canadian tour, with stops in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver! We're all really excited!

OEK's summer holidays begin August 2nd for three weeks. We'll be back from our travels on August 24th, and we're looking to hear about your adventures as well!

Dear Students,

My name is Cynthia Castanon and I am very excited to be your teacher! I love playing games and I love making all my students laugh. I enjoy karaoke, dancing, and of course traveling. I have been to Japan once before and I am thrilled to be coming back to Shimizu to see all my friends. I lived in Shimizu for one year and I really enjoyed the cherry blossom season and eating Shimizu's best SUSHI!!! One of my favorite places to visit is Izu because it is cool in the summer, I can go swimming and I can ride the ferry from Dream Plaza. This year I hope be a good teacher and friend to all of you. I know we will have lots of fun and we will create great memories. I can't wait to meet you all in September! Let's study English!

私の名前はシンシア　カスタノンです。　OEKで皆さんの先生になるのが楽しみ!!!　私はゲームをしたり、生徒を笑わせたりするのが大好きです！またカラオケやダンスそれに旅行も好きです。実は以前清水に1年住んでいました、だから今は清水に戻って昔の友達に会うのが楽しみでわくわくしています。以前は清水で桜を楽しんだり清水で一番の寿司を食べたり、ドリームプラザからフェリーで伊豆に行き海水浴するのが好きでした。今度は皆さんの良い先生になり、また皆さんのお友達になれたらいいです。私は皆さんと楽しみ、たくさんの思い出を一緒に作れると確信しています！皆さんに会うのを9月まで待てな～い！それでは、皆さん一緒に英語楽しみましょ！

"Hello" from Martin!

Hello,

My name is Martin and I am from New Zealand. I live in Auckland which is the main city in New Zealand. I work as an English teacher here. I work with international students of all ages, including school students and adults. Most of my students here are from Korea and China but I also have some students from Japan, Europe and South America. Auckland is quite a diverse place so I get to meet and talk to a lot of different people from different places. That is one of the main reasons why I like this job.

I have taught English overseas before. First I went to teach in a high school in New Caledonia, a small tropical island in the Pacific. After that I found a job in France where I worked in primary school.

I have travelled quite a bit, in fact just recently I went on a trip to North America. I have never been to Japan and I have wanted to work as an English teacher there for quite a long time and that is why I am very excited to be coming over. I love to visit and discover new places.

I live with my family here in Auckland. I have got a younger brother who is still in high school. I like outdoor activities such as running and hiking. I don’t watch much television but I love to watch a good movie. I also love drawing and everything to do with art.
I’m looking forward to starting my new job at OEK and meeting and working with you!


僕の名前はマーティンです。出身はニュージーランド。今はニュージーランドのオークランドという大きな都市に住み、さまざまな国・年齢の方に英語を教えています。主に韓国・中国の生徒が多いけれど、日本人やヨーロッパ・南米出身の生徒もいるよ。オークランドは文化・人種が多様化してきて、色々な人たちとの出会いがあり、だから僕は自分の仕事が大好きです。

僕は今までに海外でも英語を教えてきました。最初に行ったのはニューカレドニアの高校、その後にフランスの小学校。それと僕は旅行もします。つい最近北米へ旅をしてきました。まだ日本には行ったことがないけれど、日本で英語を教えたいって気持ちがずっとありました。だから今とっても楽しみにしています！僕は新しい場所へ行って探検するのが大好き！今オークランドで家族と暮らしています。弟はまだ高校生です。　僕はランニングやハイキングなど外でのアクティビティーが好きです。テレビはあまり見ないけれど、映画は大好き！あと、絵を描くことが好きで美術に関することは何でも好き!!!　新しくおしゃべり英会話教室での仕事・皆に会えること、とっても楽しみにしているよ！みなさん、どうぞよろしくお願いします！

Dear friends at OEK,

I wanted to write to all of you to let you know that I am leaving OEK at the beginning of October. I feel that it’s time that I have a new adventure and I feel a need to spend more time with my friends, family and Canada’s wide-open spaces.

It is not an easy decision, because, all of you have come to be a big part of my life over these past 2 years in Japan. I have loved every minute of it, even though there have been many challenges; I have grown considerably as a person because of them. I consider every person I’ve met through this school, whether you are 7 months old or 70 years old, as a friend. You have really made me feel at home in a land that, as a child, I only ever dreamed about visiting. I wanted to thank all of you for everything you’ve done and for you to know that you all have very special places in my heart.

OEK is such a magical place. It’s a place where: the staff can have meetings under a sakura tree, kids can run and play with their teachers, the boss can spray you down with a water hose if you’re hot, butterflies and lizards can laze in the gardens and it’s a school where students are not only taught, but where the teachers are also taught by the students. I really do hope that with my departure you continue to study here and have fun in OEK’s relaxed and unique atmosphere and take part in great events like Kappore, dinner parties etc that it hosts.

Although I’m moving back home to Canada, it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to maintain contact with OEK and with all of you. I’m not done with Shimizu or OEK and would love to visit again in the future. I would love to see you all again!

This is not “Sayonara!”; it’s “See you later.”

訳）おしゃべり英会話教室のみんなへ

　僕は10月初旬におしゃべり英会話教室を去ります。ただ素直に今が次のステップにいく時だと思ったし、またこれからカナダの広いスペースで家族や地元の友達と一緒に過ごす必要があると感じたからです。　僕にとって、これは簡単な決断ではありませんでした。この2年で皆は僕の人生のとても大切な存在となりました。僕自身たくさんのことをチャレンジしなければならない2年でもありましたが、毎分その時を楽しみ愛することができました。人としても、とても成長できました。この教室を通して出会った全ての人、7ヶ月の赤ちゃんから70歳の方、みんな僕の友達です。僕は子供の頃、日本という国に行きたいなぐらいに思っていましたが、皆のおかげで今はただの夢じゃなく日本は僕のふるさとでもあります。みんなは僕の心のとても大切な人。

おしゃべり英会話教室は素晴らしい所です。ここはスタッフが桜の木の下でミーティングをし、子ども達は先生たちと思いっきり笑い遊び、暑い時ジェーンはホースで水をかけてくれるし、蝶々やトカゲは庭でのびのび生き、ここはただ生徒達が学ぶだけではなく生徒から講師たちも学ぶことができる。僕が去った後も皆このリラックスできるユニークな教室でたくさん学び、たくさん楽しんで欲しい！

僕が帰るからって決してこの教室・皆の事がどうでもいいって思っているわけじゃないよ。まだ清水・OEKでの僕は終わってない！将来絶対にまた皆に会いにきたいと思っている！

Happy Birthday!!

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend the OEK staff gathered together with some friends to celebrate Ken and Kotoe's birthdays.

On Sunday we went on a trip out to Kakegawa with some of our friends for a day of fun at Tsumagoi!

We went go-karting and sledding, and played in the park and on trampolines! It was really great to be able to celebrate their birthdays together, and to do so with such a great group of friends!



On Monday night some of the teachers and students went out together to celebrate again. It was really great to spend some time with our students outside of class, and lots of fun too!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and make Kotoe and Ken's birthdays memorable and fun. We had a great time with you all, and can't wait to see you again at the next OEK event!

　7月のとある週末、OEKの先生ケンとマネージャーのコトエの誕生日をお祝いするために友人らが集結。日曜日に掛川のつま恋に遊びに出かけました。ゴーカートをしたり、ソリをしたり、公園で遊んだり、トランポリンをしたり！二人のお祝いをすばらしい友人達と出来て本当に良かったです。
　月曜日の夜は生徒さんも加わり、皆でまたまたお誕生会をしに出かけました。生徒さんたちと教室の外で時間を一緒に過ごし、こちらもまたとても楽しかったです。
　参加してくれた皆さん、ありがとう。コトエとケンの誕生日が楽しく思い出深いものになりました。皆さんと一緒にすばらしい時間を過ごすことができました。また皆さんと次のOEKのイベントでお会いするのを心待ちにしていますね！

HELLO from Jayne in Adeladie

I have come back from Japan with hardly any photos of my time in Japan. And no new staff photos either! How disappointing! I searched but all I have are a couple of me ... hopefully they express a little of the great time I had in Japan!

It is over 18 months since we moved to Umegaoka. We have really claimed this space as OEK. Our ongoing commitment is to continue creating a great English language learning and communication centre for all!

I really want to say how delighted I am to be working at such a great place as OEK. The opportunities it provides me in meeting and working with so many wonderful people is a privilege. The combined energies of a great staff, great management, great students, great mothers and carers and 2 fabulous classrooms have indeed created a vibrancy to learning and practicing communication skills at Oshaberi Eikaiwa Kyoshitsu for everyone of us!









So I just want to thank all my staff and students for the many good times shared within these classroom walls and beyond ... I have brought back to Adelaide with me 3 months of many good memories and a few good challenges as well.
I now find myself transported into winter, wooden stoves, a very pregnant daughter and a very active grandson and other projects I am working on.

And for now I can I give my full attention to things that I need to do here as I have left Oshaberi in excellent hands!

I know all my staff are getting excited about our Minato Kappore Event. And what a festival it will be - Ken is a legend and I just know I will be missing out on one fabulous event! Remember it is for all of us - the young and the old! It is a time to celebrate our good lives!!!










2 years ago my son, Shinya - who I do not get to see very often - unexpectedly came, and danced with us - I only have a couple of photos and not very good ones at that, but I love them. This is because they remind me how happy I was. And it was wonderful feeling that way with heaps of happy people!
I totally recommend it !

I also have my own blog - and it gets translated into Japanese - thanks to some wonderful students - so you can access it by going into staff album link, then scroll down to my picture and the link to my personal blog is there ... I will try to be more regular!

訳）　アデレードにいるジェーンより“こんにちは”

日本で写真を撮る機会がないまま、ここアデレードに戻ってきました。新しいスタッフの写真も全く撮れなかった～。本当残念！！
探したけれど私が持っていたのは数枚の自分が写った写真のみ…。その写真から日本での楽しい生活が少しでも皆さんには伝わるといいな。

私たちが梅が岡教室に移ってから18ヶ月以上が経ちます。私たちはOEKとしての場所を求めてきました。私たちの責任は、すばらしい英語習得を生み出し、みんなにとってのコミュニケーションセンターであり続けることです！
たくさんのすばらしい人たちと出会い働けているという好機は私にとっての特典です。
一体となったすばらしいスタッフのパワー、すばらしい経営、すばらしい生徒、すばらしい親御さんのケア、そしてすばらしい２つの教室によって、本当に私たち全員は活き活きと学び、コミュニケーションスキルを習得することができます！

私は全ての生徒、スタッフにとっても感謝しています。３ヵ月間のすばらしい思い出とチャレンジする気持ちをアデレードに持ち帰ってきました。
今、季節は冬へと変わり、木製ストーブに出産をひかえた娘、とっても元気な孫とともに新しいプロジェクトをここでスタートさせています。
今は日本で手付かずだった仕事に集中することができています。

港かっぽれをスタッフ一同とても楽しみにしています。どんなお祭りになるでしょうね。
ケンはかっぽれの達人で…　あ～私も参加したくなっちゃう!!!　すばらしいイベントを１つ逃してしまうのは残念！　皆さん、これは皆のためのお祭りです。そこの若い方も、お年寄りの方も、みんなでこのお祭りで祝いましょう！！！


２年前、それほど頻繁に会うことのない息子シンヤが急に来て、私たちと一緒に踊りました。
うまく撮れていない数枚の写真しかないけれど、私のお気に入りです。私、すごく楽しんでいるのが分るでしょ。祭りの時は、みんなとってもハッピーで…
オススメです！

Kappore!

Hello again!

We've decided when Kappore practices are going to be held at the school.
The dates are as follows: July 2nd, 9th, 16th and 30th. We will have the projector ready and waiting for everyone from 6-7 on these nights.

Please note that there are no parking spaces available for cars and that there is a limit of 10 people per night for practice in the big room at Umegaoka classroom. If you could please let the managers know what nights you want to come, we would really appreciate it.

　港かっぽれの踊りの練習日程が決まりました。場所は、梅が岡教室です。練習日は７月２日、９日、１６日、３０日です。（木曜日）　プロジェクターを準備して皆さんのご参加お待ちしています！　時間は、午後６時から７時まで。
　車の駐車場がご用意できないため、自転車などでお越しください。
上記の日程で、参加できる日をご連絡いただけたら嬉しいです！（各定員１０名です）

Kappore and Minato Matsuri!

Hey everyone!


It's just Ken writing to you. I'm getting really excited about Kappore and dancing in the streets on the first of August with all of you! Last year was such a fun time and I feel very privileged to be able to actually see a festival like this - let alone participate in one.


I can't believe that it's been a year since the last Kappore. Stay tuned for more information for the dance practices that I'll be leading with the projector at Umegaoka's classroom.
